Greetings Citizens of Douglas and Coffee County! It is HOT and even though summer is not officially here, I know some people are already cooling off in the pool, lake, or heading to the beach.   I would like to stress the need to be safe, whether it is taking CPR courses, enrolling your kids in swim lessons, or summer programs with the recreation department.  Our recreation department still has summer programs for all ages.  Make sure you have planned for your children over the summer.  Please keep your eyes on children and older adults in this heat, know the signs of heat exhaustion and stay hydrated if you are outside.  If you are headed to cool off in water, I strongly encourage everyone to practice water safety when around bodies of water.  You can never be too cautious when swimming in water.  All it takes is a few seconds for someone to drown.  Stay safe and let’s all have a great summer!

How about those CCA Patriots?  What a year — state champions in baseball and tennis!  Great job, and now you can see how your hard work has definitely paid off.  Our youth continue to amaze and motivate me. To the students, teachers, and staff, congratulations on a fantastic year.  Go Patriots!

I am personally inviting everyone to come to the Weir Center on June 6 at 7:00 pm for a town hall meeting concerning the tax allocation district (TAD) referendum that will be on the ballot in November 2019.  I want everyone – city and county residents – to join the conversation about the vote to establish a tax allocation district at the old high school grounds.  Even though county residents cannot vote for or against this in November, I know this will be a win-win redevelopment for the city and county and I want everyone to be well educated about TAD – no matter where you live.  As the mayor of Douglas, the TAD will be impactful on our city, county, and surrounding counties.  I have personally invested countless hours seeking a better understanding of the impact of a TAD on our community.  The town hall meeting is for everyone to ask questions directly to the developers.  Our community needs your input at the town hall meeting.  This is our moment.

Since taking office in March, Police Chief Shane Edmisten, has been working hard to improve relations between the citizens and the Douglas Police Department.  Coming up on Saturday, June 8, from 8 am-10 am, at Northcutt Soul Food, Chief Edmisten and Douglas police officers are hosting Coffee with a Cop.  Come on out enjoy a cup of coffee, grab some good breakfast, and let’s communicate with our local officers.  I know it’s early on a Saturday morning, but if we don’t take the time to communicate with our officers in a relaxed environment, how can we expect officers to hear us?  Let’s talk about what’s going on in your neighborhood that shouldn’t be.  Let’s talk about solutions to some of the crime that is taking place.  This is your chance to be heard – don’t sleep through it.

The Touchdown Club is still running its fundraiser so get your tickets before they are gone!  We will be raffling off a 14 foot Alweld boat with a 20 HP Tohatsu motor, seats, trolling motor and trailer for $10 per ticket.  The drawing will be held on June 14, 2019.  Please purchase a bunch of tickets from the following locations: Johnny’s Pizza, Ameris Bank, McRae Pharmacy, Hungry Howie’s, Fireside Sub, Broxton Colony Bank, More Than Graphic, Elmo’s Bait Shop, and Earl Mayo’s Insurance.  For those that fish – buy some tickets, you know this is a steal!

I

want to end by saying congratulations to all the 2019 graduates!  We have some amazing kids and young adults in schools in Douglas-Coffee County.  I love seeing all the last day of school and graduation photos.  Time flies by really quickly so I encourage everyone to take a minute and enjoy these moments.  Time doesn’t turn back, so make time for family and friends on these special occasions.  To my graduates, I wish you all the success there can be in life.  And remember where you came from and can always come back to – good ole Douglas and Coffee County.
