Georgia Water Coalition hosting coal ash meeting tomorrow in Douglas

Please join Georgia Water Coalition member organizations in Douglas for a community meeting to discuss coal ash. The meeting will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 408 East Ashley Street.

Millions of tons of coal ash (toxic waste product from burning coal) are dumped in Georgia each year. In fact, coal ash from out of state is currently dumped at Waste Mangement’s Chesser Island landfill in Charlton County and landfills across the state. Legislators introduced SB 123 to help close a loophole that encourages disposal of toxic coal ash in privately owned landfills in Georgia.

Come learn what impacts this waste can have on our communities, and what we can do to ensure Georgia does not become a dumping ground for out of state coal ash.

Learn how one local citizens’ group organized to prevent out-of-state coal ash, a threat to local water quality, from being dumped in their community.

This meeting is free and open to the public. Please RSVP at https://forms.gle/yxAZxP1oo7mbBxBY6

The Georgia Water Coalition, including local Georgia Water Coalition members Satilla Riverkeeper and No Ash At All, is hosting the meeting.

For more information, please contact Laura Early, riverkeeper@satillariverkeeper.org or phone at (912) 462-5094.
