In a joint community effort to ensure South Georgia State College (SGSC) student-athletes have access to quality care, Orthopedic Surgeons of Georgia (OSGA) has hired certified athletic trainer, Shelby Davis. Davis will be responsible for the day to day athletic training for all SGSC athletes and will remain on the SGSC campus full-time interacting with the student-athletes and working with the SGSC coaches.

SGSC is required to have a certified medical professional who attends all on-campus sporting events. Davis will fill this role on both the Douglas and Waycross campus as well as offer additional sports training services to all athletes on campus.

Davis is certified and licensed as an athletic trainer. She was formerly the athletic trainer for Franklin County High School through Athens Orthopedic Clinic and most recently with PlaySafe. She graduated from the University of North Georgia with a Bachelor of Athletic Training where she was trained in injury evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation. During her training, she worked, hands-on, with student-athletes of the University of North Georgia, Brenau University and area high schools.

Davis will be acting under the direct supervision of Dr. Stephen Augustine of Orthopedic Surgeons of Georgia. The training regimens will be overseen by Dr. Augustine, who has extensive experience in sports medicine including a fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, after completing his orthopedic surgery residency and, later, twelve years of service with the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, Dr. Augustine was the Chief of Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy Division and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Shands Hospital – University of Florida Health Science Center. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

In addition to on-campus supervision and training, SGSC student-athletes will have a front-of-line service to the Orthopedic Surgeons of Georgia office. OSGA is home to the most highly trained team of orthopedic surgeons in South Georgia. OSGA, as a group, covers all areas of orthopedics and has four surgeons, each fellowship trained in their respective specialties. With offices throughout South Georgia, including both Douglas and Waycross, this partnership is a perfect fit and one that will foster a successful sports program for years to come.
