In recognition of Heart Month in February, Coffee Regional Medical Center and the Wellness Center invite the public to participate in the Heart 2 Heart Festival at General Coffee State Park on Saturday, February 26. This festival is held annually as one of two main fundraising events in support of the Cardiac Rehab Program and Scholarship. The weekend is kicked off with “Wear Red Day”, this year held on Friday, February 25, in remembrance of those with cardiovascular disease.

Beginning at 8:00am Saturday, a series of family-fun events will take place that include something for the whole family to enjoy. The activities begin with the Heart 2 Heart Run which consists of a 1.5-mile Fun Run for ages 5-10 years old, a 1.5 mile walk for adults and youth, a 5K and 10K run, as well as a Virtual Run option you can do from home. The run path winds through the state park’s beautiful grounds with water stations and well-marked wayfaring signs along the way. Each entrant receives a t-shirt, a delicious lunch donated from Chick-Fil-A, a chance to win awards for their run times, and access to other fun activities throughout the day.

Following the run, all participants and their families are invited to take part in several planned activities throughout the state park. From meeting the farm animals to solving a scavenger hunt, feeding reptiles and making crafts like the pioneers used to, there is something for everyone. General Coffee State Park also offers boat and bike rentals for the afternoon if you and your family want to further explore the 1,500-acre park. Rent a kayak or canoe and enjoy the serenity of the calm lake or try a pedal boat and navigate the waters with your friends and family. The campgrounds and cabin rentals are also available for those looking to have a weekend away from home. For more information on the activities available at the state park, please contact the General Coffee Park main office at (912) 384-7082.

All funds raised from the Heart 2 Heart Festival and “Wear Red Day” will be used for Cardiac Rehab Scholarships. Cardiac Rehab is a physician-prescribed program for patients who have had a cardiac procedure or episode, such as:

  • Heart attack within 12 months
  • Stable chest pain (angina)
  • Valve Replacement
  • Post CABG
  • Stent/PTCA
  • Heart Transplant
  • Stable Chronic Heart Failure

This program is covered by most insurance plans, however for those who are not covered, the Cardiac Rehab Scholarship makes this life-changing program possible. Through education and exercise, the goal is to help patients achieve their best health and improve their quality of life. Each patient receives an individualized exercise plan based on their health status, fitness level, and personal goals. The experienced team works together with the patients’ cardiologists to track their progress and ensure they are on a road to a stronger and healthier lifestyle.

There is still time to sign up for the Heart 2 Heart Festival. For more information or to sign up online, please visit www.coffeeregional.org/events. To speak with a team member about Cardiac Rehab, please contact the Wellness Center at (912) 383-6988.
