Charlie Benjamin “Ben” Wilson, 80, of Douglas, GA left this world for his eternal home July 16, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister (Barbara Jean Cox). Ben was born October 1, 1941 at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta, GA, the son of Julian Howard Wilson and Eloise Davis Wilson.
Ben assumed a leadership role in his family at a very early age (13), when he lost his father. He worked several odd jobs while in school, and he graduated from Lithonia High School in 1959. He was a leader in several high school sports, and he lettered in baseball, basketball, track, and football. It was during those formative years that he established lifelong friendships, which would continue throughout his life (Joe Sills, Perry Livsey, Johnny Hamby among many others). Those who knew him best would agree that not only was he a leader, but he was also a kind and gentle soul.
Upon graduation, Ben enlisted in the U.S. Army. After serving his country, and through hard work, strong work ethics and dedication, he experienced a long and successful career as a credit manager and comptroller, with Westinghouse, Cain & Bultman and Carrier. During his time with Westinghouse Ben met the love of his life, Daisy Wilson. They were married in 1964, and together they built a beautiful life, more than 57 years. They were blessed to be able to travel the world, making many friends all along the way.
Community was always a big part of Ben’s life. He believed in giving. As the father of two sons, who were actively involved in sports, Ben served in leadership roles and as President for Arlington Little League (Jacksonville, FL) for more than a decade. He was president of the Terry Parker High School Booster Club, and he coached hundreds of youth through Arlington Lions Club Youth football and Little League baseball. He established one of the first handicap baseball leagues in Jacksonville, with the “Challenger Division”. He also served as treasurer of “The Peaks” Homeowners Association in Lake Lure, NC (the log cabin he loved), served as an elder and treasurer in his church, and he was very active in the Backpack Outreach Program. Ben was also very passionate about visiting and contributing to Thornwell Children’s Home in Clinton, SC.
Ben had four loves in his life, his Savior, his family, his friends, and his Atlanta Braves. He leaves behind his wife (Daisy) and their two sons (Chuck/Hope Wilson of Yulee, FL, and Jute/Sheila Wilson of Milner, GA), grandchildren (Taylor, Chase, Lucas, Mason, Hannah, Zeke), his sister (Brenda Jane/Jackie Knight of Merritt Island, FL), and several special nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to the First Presbyterian Church of Douglas, GA, and to Dr. Jha for his commitment in attending to Ben’s health needs these past six years. Though an exemplary physician, they were also friends.
Ben will forever be remembered and deeply missed for his gentle spirit, big heart, and warm smile.
A celebration of Ben’s life will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Douglas, GA. The family will receive visitors in the sanctuary of the church, one hour prior to the service (1:00 PM).
Memorialization will be by cremation at Ben’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Ben Wilson to First Presbyterian Church – P.O. Box 1210, Douglas, GA 31534.
