Georgia Cities Week is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Douglas will join other cities across Georgia celebrating the Georgia Municipal Association’s Georgia Cities Week during the week of April 22-29, 2023. The city will hold a variety of events throughout the week focusing on the 2023 theme, “Georgia Cities: Lighting the Way”.
“We’re very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tony Paulk. “Cities provide the services and infrastructure to help businesses grow and set the stage for events where families and individuals can gather as a community.”
To kick off events for Georgia Cities Week, Keep Douglas Beautiful (KDB) will host its second clean-up event for the year, the Great American Cleanup, on Saturday, April 22, 2023, 9 AM – 11:30 AM. Groups will journey to streets in Douglas as identified by the KDB Litter Index. Cleanup will take place at 9 AM and last until 11:30 AM. Volunteers are needed and this is a great opportunity for clubs, organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals to roll up their sleeves and earn community service hours by making Douglas beautiful. Public Works/ESG Operations will offer Tire Amnesty Week which will be held on Monday, April 24 – Friday, April 28, 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Tire Amnesty Week will allow citizens of Douglas to dispose of up to 4 tires per resident at 1011 Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley and College Park Dr.). Proof of residency such as a utility bill is required. No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted. Rubber only – no rims. Citizens must be in line by 4:15 PM. FMI: (912) 389-3450.
Spring Junk Free Week will be Monday, April 24 through Friday, April 28, between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm at 1011 Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley and College Park Dr.). For citizens inside the city limits of Douglas, fees will be waived, during this one week, on big household and junk items. This will not apply to tires or hazardous chemicals. Here’s your chance to prove you know Douglas better than anyone! The city’s Facebook page will be full of questions for Trivia Week relating to city services, projects, or people who helped “Light the Way” for progress in Douglas. The regular City Commission meeting will be held on Monday, April 24, at 6 PM at City Hall. The Mayor and Commission will hold a Mayor’s Youth Council Recognition Night to recognize members of the Mayor’s Youth Council who are seniors in high school for their accomplishments. The meeting will be LIVE on the city’s Facebook page (@Cityofdouglasgagovernment) for those who can not attend or will be available to view on the city’s YouTube channel (@CityofDouglasGAGov) following the meeting on Tuesday. The City of Douglas would like to invite everyone to attend the Ribbon Cutting and Open House for the new City Hall located at 302 S. Madison Avenue. The Ribbon Cutting will be held at 10:00 AM with the Open House beginning immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony until 2:00 PM. The City of Douglas will hold its monthly Barracks #5 Open House for the public to view renovations of Barracks #5 located at Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport on April 26, 2023, 9 AM-1 PM. The building, Barracks #5, is a part of the historic World War II Army-Air Force Flight Training Air Base and was utilized as housing for the cadets that trained at the Air Base before transferring to other bases to advance their flight training.
On Wednesday, April 26, Coffee Alliance for Arts will host Munch and Music at Emma Ward Park at 12 noon and will showcase the Coffee High School Show Choir. The Douglas Fire Department is partnering with Chick-Fil-A for the Touch-A-Truck Event on Thursday, April 27, 2022, 5 PM-7 PM. Bring the kids and let them learn about fire safety while climbing in the fire trucks and meet our DFD Firefighters. Sparky the Fire Pup will be on hand to offer free hugs to children. The Douglas Police Department will host a Women’s Firearms Class on Saturday, April 29, 2023, 8 AM-5 PM, at the DPD Training Center. Women who are interested in becoming safer and more proficient with firearms should register for this 8-hour instructional class. Participants are required to bring their handguns and 50 rounds of practice ammunition to the class. The class is limited to 15 participants and pre-registration is required. On Saturday, April 29, 2023, Georgia Cities Week will close out with the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce/Visit Douglas-Coffee County Wings and Things Fly-In and Festival at Douglas Municipal Airport from 9 AM-6 PM. Activities will include an aviation fly-in, Best Wings Contest featuring Douglas-Coffee County restaurants, Historic Warbird Aircraft, WWII Re-Enactors, Antique Car Show, Vendors, Food Trucks, Entertainment, a Kids Area, and more!
