For the love of all things basketball, riding his golf cart, wrestling, and… mullets. Brock Higgins, an 11-year-old Coffee County native, is showing off his luscious locks in the 2023 USA Mullet Championship. This is a nationwide competition that is the “ultimate showdown for the most epic mullet,” according to the official mullet champ website.

It was back in 2020 that Brock told his mom, Paula Higgins, he wanted to grow his hair out for a mullet. As stated by his mom, he was playing baseball at that time and saw a lot of the other young boys and Major League Baseball players styling their hair in mullets. After some convincing by Brock, his mom agreed to the new ‘do.

However, this is not his first mullet rodeo. Brock competed in the USA Mullet Championship in 2022 and finished in the top 25. This earned him some much deserved spotlight on the radio and even with FOX News. Paula says that with around 300 kids in his age group this year, only 33 will continue on to the next round after voting ends at 11:59 on Monday, July 17. If Brock secures enough votes, he will be headed to the next round of eliminations where donations, votes, and judges will be taken into consideration. If Brock were to win the competition, he would receive $5,000. According to his mom, if he would have won last year, he planned to give at least half of his prize money to charity.

The 2022 mullet championship raised money for Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids charity. This year, 100 percent of the donations will go to Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors to help United States Military Veterans. So far in this year’s competition, the USA Mullet Championship has raised $32,396.87 in donations for the Wounded Warriors charity.

When asked if he plans on continuing the mullet legacy and competing in the years to come, his mom says, “Yes. If he wants to cut it I’ll let him, but I think he’s planning on keeping it.” As Brock pushes forward in this year’s competition, he and his mom are very appreciative of the local support he has gotten throughout the process.
