Any time you face the Colquitt County Packers, you’ve got to be ready for a battle. The Coffee Middle School sixth grade Trojans were ready for a fight and then some. They defeated the sixth grade Packers 44-14 in Douglas on Wednesday afternoon.

Luke Weldon and DJ McRae each scored three touchdowns apiece, DJ Simpson grabbed a pair of interceptions, and quarterback Jonah Squires added a touchdown of his own.

“I feel pretty good after this long summer. We’ve been out in this heat since June and these guys have been with us the whole time. they did a great job. I was kind of worried — I wasn’t sure we could get  a whole lot of time to do a lot of tackling because of the heat. We played alright. I’m happy . . . We’re going to enjoy this one. It’s always good when you beat Colquitt,” said head coach Mike Martinez following the game.

The win over Colquitt was contagious — the following day, the Coffee JV held on and defeated the Colquitt JV 14-13 at Jardine Stadium.  Hopefully these two wins will set the tone for Friday night’s showdown against the Bainbridge Bearcats, also at Jardine Stadium.
