For the second time in three years, the same group of girls from the Douglas-Coffee County Parks and Recreation Department won a GRPA state softball championship. The 10U girls rolled through the district
tournament without dropping a game then continued with another undefeated performance at state.
In district, the 10U girls scored 55 runs and allowed just 12 in four games. They defeated Wayne County for the district title. In four more games at the state tournament, they scored 62 while allowing 12. And
eight of those 12 runs came in the championship game which saw the Douglas girls defeat Lyons 10-8.
The girls had also won a warm-up tournament in Baxley prior to district and state, giving them three consecutive tournament wins to finish the season.
Team members are: Cally Coffee, Sam Stewart, Kinlee King, Nadiya Joiner, Embry Whiddon, Maelie McCallum, Matilyn McCallum, Layla Daniel, Olivia Merritt, Charleigh Wilson, Pailyn Hutcheson, and Lanie Justice. Erik Merritt, Kade Hutcheson, and Suzan Justice are the coaches.
This same group of girls won the GRPA state championship in 2022 when they were 8U, something no other team from Douglas has ever done.
