Friday night against the visiting Ware County Gators, the Coffee Trojans ran 57 offensive plays. Thirty-five of those plays went to senior running back Tyrese Woodgett. With fellow senior Tyrese Hansley out for the game with an injury, Woodgett had to handle most of the ball-carrying duties himself. In fact, he wasn’t just a big part of the Coffee offense Friday night – he was nearly all of it all by himself. The Trojans finished with 348 total yards on the night – 60 percent of which were courtesy of Woodgett.
Woodgett was Coffee’s workhorse against the Gators, carrying the ball 35 times for 209 yards and scoring all three of the Trojans’ touchdowns. This follows his 10-carry, 89-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Bainbridge Bearcats last week.
Coffee’s second leading rusher against Ware was senior Zean Preston, whose lone carry went for 19 yards and set up Woodgett’s third – and game-winning – touchdown about halfway through the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Jordan Phillips completed two of eight passes for 52 yards. He also threw his first interception of the year. Bray Coe (17 yards) and Tresean Smith (35 yards) caught Phillips’s two passes.
Tico Smith (three) and Jaylon Simpkins (two) led the offensive line in pancake blocks.
On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Chris Reed recorded 11 tackles while Jyarius Carter brought down eight Gators. Montana McGinty also had seven tackles. McGinty and Ja’siah McRae each had a sack. McRae was in the game for just one play — and that was the play in which he sacked the quarterback. Overall, the defense allowed just 91 total yards, only 21 of which came in Ware’s rushing game.
The Trojans are 2-0 on the season and face Columbia County (Lake City, Fla.) Friday night at Jardine Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30. The game can be livestreamed on the NFHS network. Local play by play is provided by Brian McNeill with Scott Brooker adding color commentary.
