A 17-year-old allegedly wearing a mask and wielding a gun went to the Atkinson County Homecoming dance Saturday night, which was being held off campus at The Venue, a private multi-purpose center in Pearson. The suspect has been apprehended, according to a Facebook post by the Pearson Police Department.

According to the post, a Pearson police officer and an Atkinson County sheriff’s deputy were posted near The Venue when a juvenile approached them and reported that someone was inside The Venue with a gun. He was also wearing a mask, the juvenile said. The officers went to the location; one went to the front door and the other went to the back door. Students were fleeing the dance and scattering once they were outside.

According to the Facebook post, witnesses gave the officers a description of the individual. They found someone who matched the description and detained him. The post says that at first he denied being involved. Later, he admitted to having a ski mask but denied having a gun. Officers recovered the mask but did not find a gun. The suspect has been arrested and taken to the Atkinson County Jail.

Sunday morning, the Atkinson County School System released a statement regarding the incident. The statement is as follows:

“In light of the events that took place last night at a parent-hosted gathering attended by many of our students, we want to assure our community that the safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority. The district closely monitored the updates provided by law enforcement last night, and these agencies are currently continuing to investigate and post updates.

“To support our students, extra school counselors and social workers will be available on Monday to provide any assistance needed. Additionally, we will be implementing extra security measures to further ensure the safety of everyone on campus.

“While we deeply appreciate the efforts of parents who have volunteered and expressed interest in hosting events for our students, please be aware that all future school-related events will be held on the campus of Atkinson County High School, with proper security and staff present.

“We appreciate everyone’s continued support as this situation is being investigated. We also thank the Pearson PD and the Atkinson County SO for their prompt response in working to apprehend the person(s) responsible for this situation. We will continue to work with these agencies, and we will keep you informed of any further updates. Again, thank you parents and all of Atkinson County for helping us maintain safety for our students.”

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, authorities ask that you call Tri-County 911. The investigation is active and ongoing. No one was injured in the incident.
