St. Andrew’s Anglican church celebrates 125 years of worship in Coffee County. The first services, according to the Anglican liturgy, were held by the Rev. J. W. Turner on September 11, 1899 in the Methodist Episcopal Church South. St. Andrew’s Church was eventually formed and many of the current members of St. Andrew’s have ancestors that were part of that original congregation. The first Communion was held on Easter Day, April 15, 1900.
To celebrate the 125-year heritage of Anglican worship in Coffee County, several special events are planned for the weekend of September 21 and 22.
September 21 at 6:30 p.m., St. Andrew’s will host a community hymn sing at the Martin Theatre. A choir made up of many members of the community will perform that evening. Special guests for the event will be the legendary Georgians Quartet. Begun by W. L. “Smiling Mac” McGuyrt in 1954, the quartet now is led by his son Calvin McGuyrt. The group has recorded 25 albums and charted three top 40 singles. The group was voted the top male quarter for the Southeastern Southern Gospel Music Conference, which covers 12 states. A special offering will be received on Saturday evening to benefit the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County.
September 22 at 10:30 a.m., St. Andrew’s welcomes the Most Rev. Robert Duncan, Archbishop Emeritus of the Anglican Church in North America, and the Rt. Rev. Alex Farmer, Bishop of the Gulf Atlantic Diocese of the Anglican Church in North America, to the Sunday morning worship service. Archbishop Duncan served as the first Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America and Bishop Farmer serves as the second Bishop of the Gulf Atlantic Diocese.
All are welcome to attend either event. For additional information please contact the church at 912-384-2368 or text the church office at 833-356-8870
