South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team remains undefeated through five games after sweeping the 11th annual Applebee’s Okefenokee Classic this past weekend in Waycross.

The Hawks (5-0) held on to defeat Denmark Tech 81-77 Friday night and mounted a second half comeback Saturday afternoon to beat St. Petersburg Community College 74-69.

The Hawks trailed St. Petersburg 42-31 after the first 20 minutes, making only 32 percent of their field goals, a total of four three-pointers, and shooting less than 50 percent from the free throw line. The St. Petersburg lead grew to as many as 15 points in the second half.

Shooting improved greatly for SGSC in the second half, allowing the Hawks to chip away at the deficit and take the lead late in the game. The Hawks shot 50 percent from the field, made seven three-pointers (47 percent), and hit 67 percent of their free throws in the final 20 minutes.

Amren Hoard (19 points, five assists) and Devon Rainey (19 points, seven rebounds) led SGSC’s scoring Saturday afternoon, followed by Justin McCarter (13 points) and Ashton Pennamon (12 points, six rebounds, and four assists).

SGSC’s next home game is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25 when the Hawks host the junior varsity team from Thomas University, Tip for the Nov. 25 game is set for 7 p.m.

The SGSC athletic department has announced a change in ticket pricing for home basketball games. All regular season home games are now $7 with children five and under admitted free.
