The Coffee Trojans reached the 10-win mark for the third consecutive season Friday night by defeating the #1-seeded Brunswick Pirates 45-14 in Brunswick in the second round of the state playoffs. The Trojans are now 10-2 on the season and will make a very long trip up I-75 to face the Sequoyah Chiefs next week in Canton. The Chiefs defeated the Woodward Academy War Eagles 35-20 in their second-round contest.
Tyrese Woodgett scored all six of Coffee’s touchdowns against Brunswick. Kicker Jonah Saylor was perfect on extra points and added a 38-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Jayden Hancock intercepted two passes while Jamir Morton picked off a third. Jyarius Carter blocked a Brunswick punt early in the second quarter that led to a Coffee touchdown.
Woodgett rushed for 217 yards on 24 carries. KJ Debruce also tallied 152 yards on 19 carries.
Brunswick scored on their first possession when quarterback Grant Moore connected with tight end Heze Kent for a 73-yard touchdown. The score gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead – their only lead of the game. Nigel Gardner broke an 87-yard run on Brunswick’s second possession of the third quarter. That would be the Pirates’ last score.
“I’m extremely proud of our coaching staff and team. It’s always great to practice on Thanksgiving. We’re one of the eight teams left. Let’s see what happens. I don’t know much about Sequoyah. We could play in the sequoias in California. It doesn’t matter to me – as long as we are still playing,” said head coach Mike Coe following the game.
All four teams from Region 2-5A advanced to third round; Lee County (#1 seed), Thomas County Central (#2 seed), and Houston County (#4 seed) won their games and will play again next week.
