Friday night’s 45-14 win over the Brunswick Pirates in Brunswick not only propelled the Coffee Trojans to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs but it also saw two important school records fall.
Senior running back Tyrese Woodgett rushed for 217 yards on 24 carries and six touchdowns. His 36 points set a new single-game school record. The previous record stood at 30 points and was held by a few of the biggest names in Trojan football lore: Mack Jones, Andre “Pulpwood” Smith, and Demetrius Davis.
The single-game rushing record also fell. The Trojans rushed for 471 yards, easily eclipsing the previous mark of 406 yards set in 2011 against Wayne County. Coffee won that game 49-24 in Jesup. It’s worth noting that current Miami Dolphins wide receiver and likely future hall of famer Tyreek Hill was a member of that 2011 team.
In addition to Woodgett’s 217 yards, KJ Debruce ran for 152 yards on 19 carries. Others rounding out Coffee’s ground attack were Bray Coe (10 yards), Tyrese Hansley (42 yards), Jakobe Goolsby (13 yards), Matthew Taylor (27 yards), and Bobby Reynolds (10 yards).
The Trojans are 10-2 overall and face the Sequoyah Chiefs Friday night in Canton. Coffee has advanced to the quarterfinals for three consecutive years.
