The City of Douglas Fire Department recently held its annual banquet to celebrate the outstanding achievements of its firefighters. During the event, they recognized the Firefighter of the Year, Officer of the Year, and those with significant years of service. This annual dinner provides an opportunity for firefighters to connect with each other and with retirees. Additionally, new members are welcomed as they embark on their promising careers.
“We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and performance of our firefighters,” says Mayor Tony Paulk. “They work tirelessly, undergo rigorous training, and respond exceptionally well when called upon. The City of Douglas honors each and every firefighter who serves our community every day.”
Firefighter Mason Herrington was named the 2024 Firefighter of the Year by the officers of the Douglas Fire Department (DFD). Mason began his career with the DFD in November 2023 and graduated from the Georgia Fire Academy in March 2024. As a young and motivated firefighter, Herrington has demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and the skills necessary to excel in his role. He has also been selected to participate in the February session of the Georgia Spartan Firefighter Program, where he will further develop these skills.
Captain Scott Wiggins was honored by his peers as the 2024 Fire Officer of the Year for the Douglas Fire Department. He began his career with the DFD as a Firefighter in February 2002. Over his 22-year tenure, he has advanced through the ranks, serving as an Engineer, Lieutenant, and now as a Captain, where he currently holds the position of Shift Commander. Scott is married to his wife, Kelley, and together they have three children. This is the second time Captain Wiggins has received this prestigious award, and it is truly well-deserved.
