The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) and Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court programs are currently seeking youth volunteers for the 2025-2026 school term. Both programs aim to develop leadership skills within our youth community. Teens interested in joining either of these youth leadership programs must complete an application and attend a mandatory meeting on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at City Hall, located at 302 S. Madison Avenue.

The DMYC serves as an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission. New youth council members will have several sessions, including orientation, discussion of city issues, brainstorming for new ideas to engage the youth in our city, participation in retreats, leadership training, and travel experiences. Participants must be Coffee County High School students, private or home school students within the city limits. Local principals, school counselors, the Mayor, or Commissioners may nominate students. The DMYC will seat at least nine members who will serve one or more terms. Membership is open to grades 9-12, ages 14-19.  Students must attend a mandatory orientation and adhere to a planned itinerary. DMYC meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers located at City Hall and usually last approximately one hour.

Youth interested in volunteering for the Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court must be in the 6th-12th grade, in good academic standing, and living and/or attending school within Douglas-Coffee County. Volunteers must demonstrate an ability to treat each case individually, objectively, and without prejudice. Students should be able to communicate clearly, work well with others, and maintain confidentiality in all cases. Students selected into the program will be required to attend mandatory”\training that will be determined later. All volunteers must attend court sessions, follow the Teen Court guidelines, maintain confidentiality, treat all participants respectfully, attend all training, and follow court rules. Volunteers must serve at least four months during the school year. Teen Court hearings are held one Saturday of the month at City Hall at 9:00 a.m. and last approximately two hours.

Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m. at City Hall (302 S. Madison Ave.) in the Commission Chambers. To obtain an application or for more information, please visit the City of Douglas website, www.cityofdouglasga.gov, or call the DMYC/Teen Court Coordinator, Dinitra Williams, at (912) 331-9398 or City Clerk Wynetta Bolder at (912) 389-3405.
