The South Georgia State College Hawks didn’t have a good weekend in Barnesville. The Gordon State College Highlanders swept the Hawks in a Saturday doubleheader 6-5 and 8-4. SGSC is now 22-26 on the season.
The Hawks have won a few games recently in walk-off fashion. In game one on Saturday, they were on the wrong end of a walk-off. The two teams were tied 5-5 through seven innings, necessitating another extra-inning contest. SGSC went 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, the Highlanders ended up with the bases loaded and just one out. Hunter Chiappetta hit a grounder to short that scored Connor Hilton for the winning run.
Jaden Camp was 3-3 with a run scored. Jesse Brown and Luke Flading each had two hits. Hayden Gmerek, the Hawks’ third pitcher of the day, took the loss.
In game two, Gordon jumped out to a 7-0 lead before SGSC scored four in the top of the fifth. The Highlanders added one more in the bottom of the inning to go up 8-4. And that’s how the game would end.
Jayden Nesmith, Alex Bairan, and Tanner Langley had two hits. Nesmith and Luke Boone doubled for the Hawks. Bairan also drove in two.
Starter Logan Taylor was the pitcher of record. He gave up seven runs (three earned) on six hits in two innings of work. He recorded three strikeouts to just one walk.
The Hawks are back in action Thursday against Gordon again in Barnesville. SGSC is 8-14 in conference play with five games remaining.
