Most people celebrate freedom and liberty on July 4. This year, however, a 21-year-old lost his freedom when he was arrested for his alleged involvement in one burglary and another attempted burglary at two local businesses.
A Douglas Police Department report states that an attempted burglary was reported around 12:40 a.m. on July 4 at The Smoke Shop on South Peterson Avenue. The owner stated that he was watching the cameras and could hear someone attempting to break down the door at the rear of the building. Several officers responded to the area. When they arrived, they did not see anyone at the business but another officer reported seeing someone flee the area.
The suspect, identified as Prince Tiki Johnson, 21, of Douglas, was apprehended by a South Georgia State College officer near Brooks Road and Second Avenue.
When Douglas police officers arrived, the report says that Johnson initially lied about being involved in the attempted break-in, stating that he was just walking. The report states that Johnson ultimately admitted that he was the individual trying to break into The Smoke Shop.
The night before, two individuals had burglarized Carter’s Fried Chicken on South Gaskin Avenue. Johnson admitted that he was one of the suspects who had broken into Carter’s but denied knowing the other person. Johnson said he took an amount of cash from Carter’s. The stolen money was returned to the business, the report says.
Johnson was charged with criminal attempt to commit a felony and burglary in the 2nd degree. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail and remains incarcerated.
