A Douglas man was jailed last Friday after authorities allegedly spotted him driving a vehicle that was reported stolen earlier that day.

Coffee County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Jonathan Vaughn Rd. on Jan. 15 in reference to a stolen 2010 GMC Sierra K1500. A report was made of the incident, and the vehicle was observed in the Oak Park area later in the day by the reporting officer. A traffic stop was performed, and the driver pulled into the parking lot of the Dollar General store off U.S. Hwy. 221 in Oak Park.

The individual driving the vehicle was identified as 25-year-old Demetrius Maurice Williams of Douglas, who was subsequently charged with driving without license and theft by taking of a motor vehicle. Officials reported the vehicle sustained some damage to the passenger side from unknown causes during the theft.

The owner was notified and responded to the location to take possession of the vehicle.

In an unrelated incident on January 17, around 7 p.m., the Nicholls Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Van Street Hwy. after the driver of a red Nissan Pathfinder allegedly ran a stop sign. The driver of the vehicle threw a cigarette pack out the window as he was being pulled over, which was recovered by the officer. Located inside the pack were three marijuana joints and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Michael Eugene Gill (50) of Nicholls.

During an investigation conducted by the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit, the white substance was field tested and returned a positive result for methamphetamine .

Gill was arrested and will be charged for failure to stop at a stop sign, possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

“I would like to thank the officers of the Nicholls Police Department and the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office for their continued efforts to rid our streets of these illegal drugs,” Sheriff Doyle Wooten said in a press release issued Monday.
