A Nicholls man was jailed recently after officers discovered a large amount of packaged marijuana during a routine traffic stop.

Sheriff’s officials reported that, on January 22, detectives with the Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit and K9 deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on North Gaskin Ave. and Jackson St. after the driver was observed failing to maintain lane. When approached by officers, the driver of the vehicle could not provide a valid driver’s license.  Authoriites stated that, during the stop, the driver became nervous and appeared to be attempting to retrieve something from under his seat.  To ensure that the driver was not trying to obtain a weapon, officers asked the driver to step out of the vehicle.

As officers were receiving the driver’s information from E-911, they detected an odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.  A K9 deputy utilized his canine and performed an air scan of the vehicle.  The dog alerted on the vehicle, and the officer conducted a search.

Fifteen small bags of marijuana were found in a backpack, and, alongside the backpack, authorities found a driver’s license belonging to the driver.

As a result, Kavious Tomlin (19) of Nicholls was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
