The South Georgia State College baseball team was victorious in both games of a doubleheader March 11. The Hawks (14-12, 1-0) defeated the Morton College Panthers to increase their winning streak to six games. In the first of the two games, it was a close victory with the Hawks winning 6-5. The second half of the doubleheader gave SGSC a more commanding lead with a final score of 5-1.

It became a struggle for the win in game one as the Hawks and Morton College exchanged the lead nine times in eight innings. SGSC finally managed to secure the lead after a strong eighth inning and a fielder’s choice that scored Cameron Coffey. SGSC’s hitting for the game was led by Christian Harkey as he went 2-for-4, drove in one and scored one run. Cayden Hatcher was in control on the mound by allowing only two hits. He allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out five during his five innings of work.

The Hawks were able to hold down the Panthers in the second game with a stronger lead. SGSC jumped out to a two-run lead in the second, scoring on an error and an RBI triple by Sean Bryan. Jared Crews went 1-for-3 with a home run in the fourth. The Hawks only allowed one run by Morton in the top of the sixth on a passed ball but answered with two more runs on an RBI single by Chase Hinson and a sacrifice fly by Landon Boyette.

Chip Devitt got the win for the Hawks thanks to eight strikeouts. He had an impressive showing by tossing five innings of shutout ball and allowing only three hits.
