Alma police reported Thursday the arrest of one man who allegedly broke into a local businesses, one of several property crimes that have occurred in a short period of time.

Cameron Smith (20) of Alma and charged with second degree burglary.  Early Monday morning, authoriites say Smith drove onto the property of Alma Pro Wash, covered the surveillance cameras with tape, and attempted to break into the money boxes.

When Smith’s efforts failed, he allegedly broke into a vending machine and stole an unknown quantity of air fresheners.  Due to the proactive efforts of the business owner, Smith and his vehicle were captured on a closed circuit video system.

Late Tuesday night / early Wednesday morning, Alma experienced six entering autos and one burglary.  In one of the incidents, a block was thrown through a vehicle window, but the suspect left emptied-handed. Other victims were not so fortunate in terms of stolen property.

Residents of Alma are encouraged to not leave any items of value in their vehicles, even if for only a short period of time. APD officials state they have worked several entering auto cases where laptop computers and firearms were stolen.

APD further encourages all residents to consider investing in a quality video surveillance system, updating / installing outdoor lighting, and cutting back any overgrown bushes around homes and other areas of a yard where people can hide.  APD cautions everyone about purchasing items such as firearms, ATVs, trailers, etc. without first verifying serial numbers through law enforcement, either through APD or the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information concerning these recent thefts, or prior thefts, is asked to contact law enforcement; information will be kept confidential.
