A 58-year-old Douglas man faces domestic violence and aggravated assault on law enforcement charges following an incident Wednesday in which he allegedly attacked his wife and a sheriff’s deputy with a pair of scissors.

According to an incident report obtained through the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Bethel Rd. shortly after 11 a.m. A witness at the location told authorities the assailant, whom he identified as Wendell Corbitt, Sr., had attacked his sister (the wife of the alleged offender) with a pair of scissors.

Law enforcement entered the residence and, according to the report, found the victim inside sitting on chair and holding a bloody rag on her leg. The offender was standing several feet from the victim with his hands in his pockets. The report states the deputy gave Corbitt several verbal commands to remove his hands from his pockets. Corbitt, however, refused his orders, clinched his fists, and “assumed an offensive posture.” Following several more attempts by the deputy to persuade Corbitt to keeps his hands within eyesight, the accused attacker allegedly grabbed the scissors and began moving towards the officer.

The deputy responded to Corbitt’s advances by deploying a Taser, and the attacker was briefly incapacitated. Undeterred, however, Corbitt again attempted to grab the scissors, managed to stand up, and the officer wass forced to deploy the Taser once more. Other deputies arrived on scene around that time and were able to gain control of the suspect.

Corbitt was transported to the Coffee County Jail and is charged with one count of aggravated assault (domestic violence) and one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
