The South Georgia State College Hawks jumped out to a 23-4 lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back, defeating the USC-Salkehatchie Indians 90-64 Thursday night.

The win avenges a 98-95 loss to the Indians in Allendale, S.C. Nov. 15. When asked for the difference between the two games, head coach Cory Baldwin said SGSC’s defense was the biggest factor.

“I think that’s the best we’ve played all year,” he said. “Defensively, we were able to hold them to under 30 points in the first half, and that was key.”

The Hawks (9-2) never trailed in the game and led by as many as 36 points in the second half.

Zaquavian Smith led the Hawks with 18 points, while O’Showen Williams had 15 points and six assists. Jarred Heard finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

The Hawks will continue their current homestand Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Florida State College-Jacksonville (FSCJ). FSCJ defeated the Hawks 76-65 Nov. 30 in Jacksonville, Fla.

“We played so well tonight that I hope we can keep the momentum going,” said Baldwin.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
