With the 2017 season approaching, South Georgia State College’s head softball coach Nicki Levering has high expectations for her squad.

Returning are four starters from the 2016 GCAA Regular Season Championship squad including GCAA First Team All-Region players Chelsea Lyons and Megan Farmer along with GCAA Second Team All-Region outfielder Halie Pearce. Coach Levering has also recruited a very talented freshman class including Sarah Smith, 5AAAA 2016 pitcher of the year from Warner Robins, Ga., and Tess Robinson, division one transfer from Douglas, Ga.

The coaching staff has a new addition with Karlie Gillam as the new assistant coach. Gillam is a former player and graduate assistant coach from the University of North Georgia and will be working with the Lady Hawks’ pitchers, who are primarily freshman athletes this season.

Coaching Levering has set high standards for her sophomore players with hopes they will lead the freshman class back to the GCAA Championship game.

Coach Levering says, “I’m excited about the new group of players, and I look forward to having another successful season.”

The Lady Hawks will start their season Jan. 28 with a game against St. Johns River State College at the JUCO Kickoff Classic Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.
