By Ishika Sadarangani, Coffee County 4-H Club Member

The 4-H Club encourages its members to be contributing members of society through leadership and community service.  As a 4-H member I strive to live up to those 4-H goals.  My name is Ishika Sadarangani and I am a 7th grade student at Coffee Middle School.  I was elected to serve as Vice President of the 4-H Southeast District Junior Board of Directors for the 2017-18 school year and recently started a community service project called Clean Teeth for Life.

I chose the dental hygiene project because I want every child to have a big, beautiful smile on his or her face and I know that good dental hygiene is necessary for that to happen.  Everyone knows that we all should brush our teeth but sometimes we need a friendly reminder.  I would like to be an orthodontist when I grow up but I want to do something now to help spread awareness of the importance of good dental hygiene.  This project is a creative and inspiring way to deliver the dental hygiene message to a large number of children in my community.  I would like to thank Dr. Griff Lindsey, Dr. Chad Fussell, Dr. Steve Wilkerson, Dr. Heidi Diaz and Fender-Goggans Orthodontics for donating supplies for me to distribute to 5th graders at each elementary school in the county.  So far I have visited Westside Elementary and will be visiting the other elementary schools in the coming months.

During a 15 minute demonstration I share the proper way to brush our teeth, explain why we need to brush our teeth, and give other dental hygiene information and tips.  I am excited to share this information with Coffee County’s 5th graders to help them confidently learn something to improve their life. I am really looking forward to improving the smiles of many Coffee County students through my Clean Teeth for Life project.
