Junior Conference, hog tagging, Thanksgiving, and more

Kevin Tatum, County Extension Coordinator

During this coming weekend (November 16-17) Coffee County 4-H members will travel to Rock Eagle 4-H Center to participate in the Georgia 4-H Statewide Junior Conference. Participants registered include Sophie Bird, Abygail Harper, Chloe Harper, Leo McIver, and Glenn O’Steen. The 4-H members will participate in workshops, community service projects, friendly competitions, a dance, and enjoy an evening of entertainment by Georgia 4-H’s Clovers & Co. We hope they enjoy their weekend and make a lot of new friends on this adventure.

Hog Show Tagging Days

4-H and FFA members, as well as pre-club students, interested in showing a hog in the 2020 County Market Hog Show in February need to bring their pigs to Coffee Middle School by the Animal Science Building on Monday, November 11, or Monday, November 18, between the hours of 4 PM and 5:30 PM to be tagged. All pigs in line by 5:30 PM will be tagged.  There will not be a veterinarian available for drawing blood work on either date this year. Exhibitors will be responsible for getting this done on their own. For more information, please contact your 4-H Agent or FFA Advisor.

4-H Adopt-A-Highway Workday

4-H members are reminded of the next 4-H Adopt-A-Highway on Thursday, November 21, at 4 PM. 4-H’ers should meet at the 4-H office for this activity. We are usually finished by 5 pm, so parents who don’t stay and help should be back at 5 PM to pick up their children.

Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule

Please take note that the UGA Extension office in Coffee County will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday, November 27, through Friday, November 29. We will reopen with normal business hours of 8 AM to 12 PM, and 1 PM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, on Monday, December 2. With the UGA labs closing during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, make sure to check with our office before bringing in samples such as water, soil, or tissue.

Fall Forum

The Georgia 4-H Board of Directors are planning a fun-filled weekend for Fall Forum, “#trending with Georgia 4-H”. The weekend (December 14-15) includes a mix of workshops and educational sessions along with opportunities for community service and exhibits. Registration for Fall Forum is open to any current 9th-12th grade 4-H members in the 2019-2020 school term. This event provides many opportunities for project work, competition, networking, and training for youth and adults.

Early bird registration fee of $90 is due by Wednesday, November 13. Regular registration is $95 and is due by Tuesday, November 26. The registration fee covers Saturday lunch, dinner, and lodging, as well as Sunday breakfast. Pizzas can be ordered Saturday morning or at lunch and are $12 each.

There will be a Fall Forum 4K race on Sunday morning. There is usually an additional registration fee for the race around $12-$15 which includes a Clover Glove race t-shirt.

4-H members can apply to lead a community service project at Fall Forum. The application information is available from the 4-H office. This online application deadline is 5 PM on Wednesday, November 20. Students may also apply to enter an exhibit in the Exhibit Fair. This would be a great way to add to your DPA Portfolio’s “Helping and Sharing” section. Online applications for the exhibit fair are due by 5 PM on Wednesday, December 4.

You are also asked to contribute canned foods to the “4-H Cans Hunger” service project. Be sure to turn in your canned foods to the 4-H office before December 1.

Please feel free to contact the 4-H office if you have additional questions about Fall Forum.

If you would like to learn how you can become more involved with the Coffee County 4-H program, please contact the Coffee County Extension office at (912) 384-1402 or visit our website at http://coffee4h.org.
