Alice Fussell Ward, age 89, of Douglas passed away on Tuesday afternoon November 12, 2019 after an extended illness at Lakeside Senior Living in Douglas.

Mrs. Ward was born on October 5, 1930 in Atkinson County, the daughter of the late William Dennis Fussell and the late Matilda Gillis Fussell. She worked as a secretary for the Coffee County Board of Education for twenty-two years and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Billy O. Ward and a sister, Jean Fussell Paulk.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynn O’Steen (husband Wayne) of Douglas and Sue McCarty of Broxton; son, Dennis Ward (wife Stephanie) of Savannah; five grandchildren, Landon Castleman (wife Jennifer) of Bishop, Josh McCarty (wife Ashley), Joe McCarty, and Whitley Phillips (husband Cody), all of Broxton, and Stefan Kirby of Savannah; three great grandchildren, Jacob Castleman of Bishop, Abby McDonald and Cooper Phillips, both of Broxton; sister, Ernestine Rizer (husband Courtland) of Walterboro, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening November 15, 2019 from 6pm until 9pm at Sims Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 16, 2019 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Donald Hattaway officiating. Mrs. Ward will lie in state from 1pm prior to the service. Interment will follow at Douglas City Cemetery.

Music will be provided by Dr. Diskin Morgan singing “Amazing Grace” and “It Is Well with My Soul” and a CD song “Family Bible.” Marsha Gillard will provide piano accompaniment throughout the service.

Pallbearers will be Landon Castleman, Josh McCarty, Stefan Kirby, Joe McCarty, Cody Phillips, Keith Rizer and Whitney Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Lakeside Senior Living Staff, members of Coffee County Fishing Club and Charles Warnock Sunday School Class.

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
