Ms. Vera Mae Delk Thurman, age 91 of Douglas, passed away Saturday morning, January 4, 2020 at her daughter’s residence following an extended illness. Ms. Thurman was born August 21, 1928 to the late Robert Delk and the late Kate Kirkland Delk. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert “Buster” Thurman; sisters, Elvina Murray and Faye Royal; and brother, Robert Delk, Jr.

 

Ms. Thurman, a native of Clinch County, had been a member of College Avenue Baptist Church for over 50 years. She had worked for the telephone company for 10 years, and 5 & 10 Store for a number of years and she was also employed with the Coffee County Board of Education.

Survivors include: Daughter Janice Thurman Claxton and husband David of Douglas; grandchild Amanda Whitford and husband Bryan of Navarre, Fla.; great grandchild Carsyn Elise Whitford of Navarre, Fla.; step-grandchild Megan Myers and husband Ray of Douglas; brother G.L. Cowart of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters Doris Stone of Jasper, Fla.; Vida Chesemore and husband David of Lakeland, Evelyn Cox of Lakeland, and Kathryne Cowart of Waycross; close friends Deborah Harkleroad Parker and Ollie Harkleroad, both of Broxton; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

 

The funeral service will be Monday morning, January 6, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at College Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Hart and Rev. Mark Mercer officiating. The interment will follow at Satilla Memorial Gardens. Ms. Thurman will be placed in the church at 10:00 to lie in state until the funeral hour.

 

Active pallbearers are Randy Harkleroad, Wayne Vickers, Craig Vickers, Robert Murray, Mike Haggar and Carl Murray.

 

Ricketson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
