Monday morning, the Coffee County Commission unanimously voted to close nearly one mile of Cherokee Road near West Green. Kerry Van Moore had filed the application for the closure. The section in question starts at the intersection of James Moore Road and runs to the intersection of Moore Road.

During the public hearing portion of the meeting, one couple – Bruce and Donna Deen, who also live on the road – spoke in favor of closing the road. After the Deens’ comments, the county voted to close the road contingent upon Moore granting an easement to the Deens that would allow them to access their property.

The commission also approved the purchase of three 2021 vehicles, Chevy Tahoes, for the sheriff’s department. Commissioners accepted the bid submitted by Brannon Motor Company for $36,800 per vehicle. Brannon was not the low bid; however, Brannon was the only bidder of the three that submitted bids that could deliver 2021 Tahoes. The other two only had 2022 models. A $50,000 USDA grant is paying for a portion of the vehicles and the grant specifically calls for 2021 vehicles. In order to comply with the grant, the county had to purchase from the vendor that could supply ‘21s, regardless of whether or not the vendor was the low bidder.

Commissioners also approved the renewal of an alcohol license for Bhaumikkumar Patel for EZ Quick Gas located on Highway 221 North and a request to post pipes and one sheriff’s office vehicle on Govdeals.com for sale.

As the meeting began, the commission recognized Charlie Wilcox and James Boggan for 20 years of service each. Both Wilcox and Boggan have retired. The county presented each with a $100 gift and a plaque.
