Cane Carver, a 15-year-old freshman from the Coffee High School golf team, is heading to the GHSA 5A Boys State Golf Championship this weekend. According to Cane’s mom, Susan Carver, this is the first time in at least 7 years that a freshman has qualified for the state tournament.

In order to qualify for the state golf championship, the Coffee High School golf team competed at Sectionals at the Okefenokee Country Club in Waycross, Ga. this past week. Cane shot a 69, was low medalist, and landed himself the third best scoring average in the region.

Cane states that he has been golfing for 4 years. He found interest in the sport when he was in just the 6th grade, says his mom Susan. Even though he was playing other sports like baseball and basketball, according to his mom, he has since decided to focus solely on golf. “He practices every day. Even on Mondays when the course is closed and there aren’t any carts to ride. He’ll just walk the course,” says Susan when speaking of how dedicated her son is to the sport.

The state championship tournament will be held in Cartersville, Ga. at the Cartersville Country Club on May 22 and May 23. During this two-day tournament, Cane will be representing the Coffee High School golf team as he battles for the championship.

With his score average coming to a 73.3 this year, Cane says, “I’m so happy because I worked so hard to get to this.” According to Cane, attending the state golf championship as a freshman was a goal he set for himself at the beginning of the season, and he will be living out that goal this weekend as he plays for the title. However, for Cane, the goal doesn’t stop at the championship. He states that he plans to continue his hard work and dedication to one day play golf at the collegiate level for the University of Georgia.
