Eugene Ates was born on February 5, 1946, to the late Alex Green and Rosa Bell Cutler-Ates. Eugene graduated from George Washington Carver High School System. He furthered his educated at college. 

 

 

Eugene became a member of Gaines Chapel AME Church on December 18, 1983, under the Leadership of Reverend L.T. Tolson, where he received spiritual guidance and devoted his spiritual life. He was the founder of the 100 Men in Black organization at Gaines Chapel AME Church. He was a dedicated member of the Unique 20 Club, an organization that served and helped the local community. 

 

 

Eugene was a hard and dedicated worker. He was employed as a manager for Colonial Eggs and then became general labor at PCC Airfoils. Eugene was known throughout the neighborhood as the appliances repairman. 

 

 

He was called home to be with the Lord early in the morning of May 30, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex Green and Rosa Bell Cutler-Ates; one daughter, Teresa Powell- Robinson; one sister, Dorothy “Snokie” Ates; three brothers: Johnnie Ates, Samuel Ates, and Moses Ates. 

 

 

Eugene leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife: Lucy Barron Ates of Douglas, Ga.; four daughters: Sonya Michelle (Melvin) Harris of Douglas, Ga., Rene (Raymond) Hosin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., Sherry (Damion) Phillips of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., and Linda Collins-Cannon of Orlando, Fl.; one son, Rodney Ates of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters: Louise Jackson and Linda Ates- McDuffie both of Douglas, Ga.; two brothers: Harry (Patricia) Ates of Douglas Ga., and Larry (Clementine) Ates of Sarasota, FL.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

 

 

Funeral services were held at Gaines Chapel AME Church on Sunday, June 4, 2023. Harrell’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
