Edward Leonidas Bagwell Jr., a beloved figure in the Douglas, GA community, passed away peacefully at Vista Park Health and Rehabilitation on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on August 23rd, 1942, to Edward Leonidas Bagwell Sr. and Iris Bennett Bagwell, Ed lived a life full of service, dedication, and community involvement.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lynda Jones Bagwell, whom he married in January 1966. He also leaves behind two sons: Lee Bagwell and his wife Holly, and Dr. Drew Bagwell and his wife Melissa, all residing in Douglas, GA. Ed’s legacy continues through his four grandchildren: Ted, Will, Harrison, and Nora Bagwell. He is also survived by four sisters-in-law and several cousins.

A lifelong learner, Ed graduated from South Georgia State College before pursuing a pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia, graduating in 1965. Upon his return to Douglas, he began his career at Malcolm Drug Store, where he worked for several years. In 1978, Ed purchased Boone’s Pharmacy in Pearson, GA, which he successfully owned and operated until his retirement in 2023.

Ed was a pillar of the Douglas First Methodist Church, where he served in various capacities throughout his life. He was also an active member of the local Kiwanis Club for an impressive 59 years, holding numerous leadership positions. His passion for Amateur Radio was well-known, and he was an enthusiastic operator.

In the 1980s, Ed’s commitment to his community led him to be elected to the Coffee County Board of Education. During his tenure, he played a key role in championing the construction of a new, consolidated high school, which significantly impacted the educational opportunities for local students.

He was a lifelong and devoted fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, a passion that took root during his time as a proud graduate of the University of Georgia. Whether cheering from the stands in his younger years, the electrifying atmosphere of game day was a cherished experience. Even as the years passed, his enthusiasm never waned, and he remained a steadfast follower of the Dawgs, eagerly watching every game on television and celebrating each victory with unwavering loyalty. His love for the red and black was a constant thread throughout his life, a testament to his enduring connection to his alma mater and the spirit of the Georgia Bulldogs.

A graveside service to honor Ed’s life and contributions will be held on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the City of Douglas Cemetery. Rev. Paul Elliott and Rev. James Sapp will officiate the service.

The Kiwanis Club and the John Wesley Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers, along with esteemed community members David Davis, Bob Preston, Dr. Guy Moorman, Dr. Roy Lindsey, and Sid Cottingham.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Douglas First Methodist Church, PO Box 738, Douglas, GA 31534. Ed Bagwell’s legacy of service, dedication, and community spirit will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
