Former Trojans playing football at the next level continued to make contributions last Saturday afternoon. Four were a part of one of the most lop-sided games you’ll ever see while three more than showed they were ready for the spotlight in spite of their relative youth (one sophomore, two true freshmen).
The Georgia Military Bulldogs faced off against the Community Christian College Lions Saturday in Milledgeville. The Bulldogs won 94-0. GMC used its running backs sparingly in the blowout win, with nobody getting more than five carries or 70 yards. Tyrese Woodgett was #2 in terms of productivity out of the backfield with two carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. Kenai Grier tallied five carries for 70 yards and a score; however, Woodgett’s average of 26 yards per carry was GMC’s best on the day.
Former Trojan Tug Vaughn handled most of the kicking duties for the Bulldogs. He made one field goal (41 yards) and was 11 out of 12 on extra points for 14 total points on the day. Offensive linemen Kyler Smith and Jerbazeon Grant cleared the way for an offense that chewed up 491 total yards with an average gain per play of 11.2 points.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers came up on the short end of 13-0 game against Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. However, the game saw true freshman cornerback Jayden Hancock announce his presence to the Charleston Southern faithful. When Coastal Carolina quarterback MJ Morris overthrew a receiver, Hancock was in position for his first interception of what promises to be a stellar career. He also recorded one tackle. Fellow cornerback Anthony Paulk, a redshirt freshman, also had three tackles against Coastal Carolina.
West Georgia’s Jyarius Carter, a freshman linebacker for the Wolves, recorded a tackle in their 34-10 upset win over #22-ranked Nicholls.
Tulane running back Maurice Turner, who had a solid day in the Green Wave’s season opener, did not play on Saturday due to an ankle injury.
