A new era of football began in Coffee County on Tuesday afternoon – girls’ flag football. The 2020-2021 school year featured the first season of flag football for the Georgia High School Association. From there, the sport has grown significantly, both within the GHSA and into other organizations as well.

The Georgia Independent Athletic Association, which governs many of the private schools in Georgia, has also adopted flag football. And now the sport has come to Coffee County via Citizens Christian Academy.

Monday afternoon, the first high school flag football games in Coffee County history were played at Patriot Field on the CCA campus. The Lady Patriots played two games – one against the First Preparatory Christian Academy Highlanders and another against the Memorial Day School Matadors.

The Lady Patriots defeated the Highlanders 40-8 and won again against the Matadors 50-0.

In game one, junior Brilynn Waldron was 11-17 passing for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Arabelle Roberts caught five passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. She also had one pick-six to go with five flag pulls. Sophomore Bristol Barrs caught five passes for 44 yards and a score. Senior Abrah Harris tallied five flag pulls and a sack.

In the second game, Waldron rushed for 106 yards on three carries. She was also 4-5 passing for 52 yards and a touchdown. Harris had six flag pulls and two interceptions she returned for touchdowns.

The Lady Patriots play again at 5 p.m. on Tuesday against the Mount de Sales Academy (Macon) Cavaliers.
