Mr. Michael Guerry “Mickey” Spain, age 67, of Douglas, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday night, April 8, 2026, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Mickey was born September 16, 1958, in Columbus, Georgia, to the late Gene Spain and the late Ann Fowler Spain. He was a hard-working family man who found no greater joy than time spent with his family. He enjoyed grilling for family and friends and was well known as a chicken wing connoisseur. He dedicated more than 40 years to the service of his community in Law Enforcement. He found relaxation in riding his motorcycle, but not just any motorcycle, it could only be a Harley Davidson. Over the years he enjoyed traveling, but in his later years he learned to enjoy travel abroad. Mickey began his law enforcement career with the Manchester Police Department. Throughout the course of his law enforcement career, he worked as a drug task force agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency, a deputy sheriff with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, and a State Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol. He also spent time working with East Coast Asphalt. Mickey accomplished many things in his life, but his greatest accomplishment was achieving the title of “MicDaddy” to his grandchildren.
Mickey leaves behind his loving wife, Kim Hutcheson Spain of Douglas, Georgia; along with a legacy of love in his three children: Ansley Marie Spain of Ambrose, Georgia, Haley (Mitch) Lewis of Douglas, Georgia, Ryan (Kaitlyn) Sellers of Wray, Georgia; and his six precious grandchildren: Mia Claire Lewis, Addie Sellers, Lillie Sellers, Chan Lewis, Hutch Sellers, and Madi Anderson. He is also survived by two sisters: Gayle (Leonard) Wiggley of Warm Springs, Georgia, and Debbie Metzler of Manchester, Georgia; along with a number of extended family members and countless friends and law enforcement family.
Mickey’s funeral service was held on Saturday morning, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the Ricketson Funeral Home Chaple with Rev. George Carroll Paulk officiating. Musical selections included: “Amazing Grace” from the recorded music of Alan Jackson, “Go Rest High On That Mountain” from the recorded music of Vince Gill, and “I Won’t Let Go” from the recorded music of Rascal Flatts. Interment followed in the Douglas City Cemetery where Clay Troup played Mickey’s favorite song, “Can’t You See” from the recorded music of the Marshall Tucker Band, from his motorcycle. Bagpipes were played at the graveside by Joe Ashcraft. Mickey’s last ride was escorted by his motorcycle riding family, along with law enforcement of the Douglas Police Department, Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, and the Georgia State Patrol.
Active pallbearers were Ryan Sellers, Mitch Lewis, Rome Pike, Kevin Keoppler, Tommy Thompson, and Mike Smeltzer. Honorary pallbearers were Rusty Fender, Jimmy Dyer, Kenny Rowell, Clay Troupe, Johnny Morrison, Ray Ricketson, Jerry Bennett, East Coast Asphalt Drivers, and Law Enforcement.
