The top two seeds in the upcoming Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament are set. Those teams – the Georgia Highlands Chargers and South Georgia State College Hawks – met Tuesday for a doubleheader at Crider Field in Douglas.
If you look at these two games as tune-ups for the tournament, you’d have to say that SGSC left fielder Brice Marchman is ready.
In the bottom of the seventh in game one with the score tied at seven apiece, Marchman connected with a 1-0 fastball and launched a walk-off home run to left, giving the Hawks a big win over the #1 seed.
Marchman’s game-winner capped a 2-4, three-RBI day. Not to be outdone, catcher and Coffee High alum Payton Bryant finished game one 3-3 with a home run of his own.
SGSC used four pitchers in the game with Skyler Kokoszka, who threw the last inning, earning the win.
Game two – that was a different story. The Chargers exacted a little revenge on the Hawks and won 13-2. Danny Vigille-grant was the only Hawk with multiple hits. He also drove in both of SGSC’s runs.
The Hawks also ran out five more pitchers, with none throwing more than two innings. The pitcher of record was Chris Grant (1.1IP, 7H, 8R, 2BB).
The Chargers did most of their damage in the second inning, when they put up six runs to take an 8-0 lead.
SGSC is 31-23 overall and 13-13 against GCAA opponents. The Hawks have one more regular season game left, a conference showdown with Andrew College tomorrow in Cuthbert.
