Wiregrass Georgia Technical College proudly announces the unveiling of its new Automation Technology Lab on the Coffee Campus, marking a major step forward in advanced manufacturing education and workforce development in South Georgia.
The state-of-the-art lab was made possible through a strong collaboration with Advanced Manufacturing International (AMI), the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber and Economic Development Authority, and additional business and industry partners. The facility features a Festo manufacturing production system equipped with collaborative robotic arms, providing students with hands-on experience using the same advanced technology found in today’s modern industrial environments. Through these collaborative efforts, the college secured $750,000 in funding to support marketing initiatives and the purchase of the Festo manufacturing system.
The unveiling event brought together college leadership, state representatives, and industry partners who emphasized the importance of aligning workforce training with the rapidly evolving needs of industry. Speakers included DeAnnia Clements, President of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College; Michael Williams, Executive Vice President; and Thomas Wesley, Vice President for Academic Affairs. Additional speakers included Joe Veranese, CEO of Advanced Manufacturing International; Matt Seale, CEO of the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber and Economic Development Authority; Mark Peevy, Chief of Staff for the Technical College System of Georgia; and Angie O’Steen, Georgia State Representative. Representative Leesa Hagan was also in attendance.
“These partnerships are creating opportunities that directly impact our students, local industries, and the future of workforce development in our region,” said Thomas Wesley. “The new Automation Lab gives students access to real-world technology and hands-on training that will prepare them for high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing and automation. This investment is not only strengthening education, but also supporting economic growth across South Georgia.”
Throughout the event, speakers highlighted the critical role collaboration plays in preparing students for careers in automation and advanced manufacturing while strengthening the regional economy.
The new Automation Lab will allow students to gain valuable real-world experience in the classroom, building skills that are increasingly essential in today’s workforce. Through interactive learning and exposure to industry-standard equipment, students will be better prepared to enter competitive careers in advanced manufacturing, robotics, and industrial automation.
