The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council officially welcomed new and returning members to the 2026-2027 Mayor’s Youth Council during the annual orientation session earlier this summer. The session was filled with learning, connection, and motivation which inspired many of the youth in attendance.
Learning sessions kicked off in the morning for the members with sessions with Mayor Tony Paulk, who shared his vision for the city. Each city department also gave insightful overviews of their roles and responsibilities, helping the Youth Council better understand how local government operates. Team building exercises were held throughout the orientation as well. A special highlight for the group was visiting various departments including the Fire Department Training Facility, Douglas Municipal Airport, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant where members gained not only a behind-the-scenes look at public service careers.
“We’re excited for a year full of growth, service, and leadership,” says Wynetta Bolder, City Clerk. “This is just the beginning of a great year for our Youth Council!”
On June 13, 2026, members of the Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council traveled to Dublin to observe a regularly scheduled meeting of the Dublin Youth Council. During the session, students reviewed upcoming events and initiatives for the year and discussed their individual roles and responsibilities within the council. The visit offered valuable insight into the operations of another youth council, providing members with fresh ideas, examples of effective leadership practices, and a deeper understanding of how young people can positively influence their communities.
