Enrollment at South Georgia State College is on the rise for Fall 2026, reflecting continued efforts to expand educational opportunities, strengthen local recruitment and create a college experience throughout the communities it serves.
In the first week of the semester, SGSC’s total fall enrollment stands at 2,086 students, compared to 1,927 students at the same point last year, an increase of 8.25 percent. New student enrollment has grown even more significantly, increasing 18.64 percent this fall. Returning student enrollment also increased by 4.89 percent. Fall enrollment figures are preliminary and may fluctuate during the opening weeks of the semester as students continue to register, adjust schedules and complete the enrollment process.
“This growth is the result of a college-wide effort to make sure students and families throughout our region know that South Georgia State College provides an affordable, high-quality education close to home,” said SGSC President Dr. Greg Tanner. “We have become more intentional about reaching students where they are, building stronger relationships with our local schools and communities, and creating programs and opportunities that give students even more reasons to choose SGSC.”
Enrollment growth can be seen across several of SGSC’s locations and delivery options. Enrollment on the Douglas Campus increased 4.55 percent, while enrollment at the Waycross Campus grew 11.4 percent. SGSC’s Valdosta location experienced the largest percentage increase at 32.26 percent. Online enrollment increased 7.36 percent, and overall Dual Enrollment participation increased 5.15 percent.
College leaders point to a combination of recruitment, academic strength, marketing, athletics and student-success initiatives contributing to the positive enrollment trend.
SGSC has placed greater emphasis on recruiting locally and strengthening its presence in schools throughout its service area. Recruitment staff are working more intentionally with high school students and counselors through regular school visits, individual student contacts and increased communication about SGSC opportunities.
The College has also focused on expanding Dual Enrollment relationships with area schools, allowing high school students to begin earning college credit while still in high school and giving them an early connection to SGSC.
“We know that personal connections matter,” Tanner said. “When our recruiters are in local schools, talking directly with students and developing relationships with counselors, students learn that SGSC is not simply a college in their community. It is a place where they can see themselves succeeding.”
New and expanding programs are also attracting students. SGSC introduced its Associate of Science in Agriculture pathway this fall, returning the College to its agricultural roots while creating new opportunities for students interested in one of South Georgia’s most important industries.
SGSC’s intercollegiate athletics programs continue to play an important role in attracting students to the College as well. Recent successes have raised the profile of Hawk athletics, including the women’s soccer team earning a region championship and men’s basketball winning its division and making a repeat appearance in the national tournament.
The continued growth of the SGSC Rodeo Club has expanded another distinctive opportunity for students during the past year. SGSC has also added a Wrestling Club, providing an additional way for students to continue competing while pursuing a college education.
Growth has also been reflected in residential enrollment on the Douglas Campus. For Fall 2026, SGSC residence halls are housing 220 students, representing an increase of 51 percent.
“Residential growth is an important part of building a vibrant campus community,” Dr. Tanner said. “When students live on campus, they have more opportunities to connect with one another, become involved and take full advantage of the college experience. Those connections can make a lasting difference in their success at SGSC.”
Marketing efforts throughout SGSC’s service area have increased as well. The College has expanded its use of electronic billboards, digital advertising and community-based marketing, along with SGSC yard signs placed throughout communities in the local service area. These efforts have focused on keeping SGSC visible and reminding prospective students that a college education is available close to home.
While bringing new students to SGSC remains an important part of enrollment growth, helping current students remain enrolled and complete their degrees is equally important.
Student Success initiatives have increased access to peer tutoring and dedicated study spaces, giving students locations where they can work independently or meet with classmates for group study. The growth in returning students reflects positive momentum in student persistence and retention.
“Enrollment growth is important, but our responsibility does not end when a student registers for classes,” Dr. Tanner said. “Our goal is to help students persist, graduate and move forward into a career or the next stage of their education. The work happening through Student Success, academics, athletics and across our campuses is helping create an environment where students have the resources and support they need to be successful.”
With enrollment increasing across multiple student populations and locations, SGSC enters the 2026–2027 academic year with continued momentum and a renewed focus on serving the educational and workforce needs of South Georgia.
“Every one of these numbers represents a student who made the decision to invest in their future,” Dr. Tanner added. “We are excited about the growth we are seeing, but we are even more excited about what it means for our communities. We simply could not do what we do without the support of the communities we serve. Whether it is a counselor encouraging a student to consider SGSC, a business partnering with one of our programs, or a family choosing to send their student here, that support makes a difference. We are proud to be a college that is deeply connected to the communities of South Georgia, and we are grateful that our communities continue to believe in SGSC.”
