It was a battle of first and second place teams at Tuesday on the South Georgia State College campus. And the first place team won.
The South Georgia State College Hawks were atop the GCAA rankings with a 5-0 record. They welcomed the Gordon State Colle Highlanders, the #2 team in the conference, to Douglas and sent them home to Barnesville with an 8-0 loss.
The Hawks scored two first half goals. Allie Hemmings put SGSC on the board first at the 12:00 mark. Her sister, Addie, assisted. Sophia Morillo (assisted by Rose Bowman) scored next at 36:00.
SGSC did most of its damage in the second half, scoring six goals: Olivia Benson (assisted by Addie Hemmings), Bailey Maroney (unassisted), Roselyn Williams (unassisted), Aixa Barerra (assisted by Madeleine Forschler), Morillo (assisted by Forschler), and then, in the 83rd minute, from Forschler (assisted by Morillo).
Keeper Toi Collins had an easy day; the Highlanders only had one shot on goal for the game.
The Hawks are now 6-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. They finish the month with a pair of games in South Carolina – against USC Lancaster at 3:30 on Friday and Cape Fear Community College on Saturday. SGSC doesn’t play at home again until October 15 when Central Georgia Tech comes to town.
