There’s nothing better than a warm pound cake right out of the oven with butter spread on top and a hot cup of coffee. I don’t know if anyone else spreads butter on theirs but you’ve got to try it. This recipe is my sister-in-law’s, Gail Gillis. She’s a wonderful cook and can whip up a perfect pound cake in her sleep! Mine was not as good as hers but practice makes perfect, as the old saying goes.   So I was curious and discovered this is where the phrase originated. The quote “practice makes perfect” is a proverb that…

To say our lives will never be the same is an understatement. Who would have ever thought that such a natural disaster would touch our State in such a way as this, especially our County? After all the hype for years by the Weather Channel or weather outlets that we were going to get hit by a hurricane and nothing culminated to the extent they expressed, we were not prepared, or at least our family wasn’t. It really became real to me when the first few trees hit the ground and shook our home. It was a night I will…

We were blessed to host a couple at our home for a weekend from St. Vincent, Bro. Cecil Richards and his wife Carol. Bro. Cecil is the pastor of Kingstown Baptist Church in St. Vincent and he also has other associational duties. He is very active in preparing and organizing our mission trips each summer on the islands and that is no easy task. Coordinating daily transportation and where we will be ministering each day is exhausting, to say the least. He’s a trooper and completely thrilled to be able to assist our group. As I’ve written in a previous…

If there’s one dessert that I would say is my “go-to,” it would be Chocolate Delight. Why? Because it’s quick, easy and affordable. And who doesn’t love Cool Whip, cream cheese and chocolate all rolled into a one-dish dessert? Have you ever witnessed at social gatherings, either church or family get-togethers, someone tends to bring their signature dishes over and over? I remember my mother-in-law always made banana split cake. It was one of my favorites but I have probably only made it a few times. Other family favorites I remember were chicken and dumplings, egg pie, chicken and rice,…

July is always a busy month, trying to squeeze in all the mission work, grandkids’ time, seminar hours required, and enjoying a little downtime, which there’s not much left.   I can’t believe school is about to start back!  I remember my summers during junior high and high school working in the tobacco patch or gathering tomatoes and peppers to earn some money for school clothes or a special item I had my hopes of saving enough for.   Early mornings, extremely hot weather and not much money for a day’s work but we all had a good time being…
