When law enforcement officers from three different Jeff Davis County agencies attempted to arrest Dalton Sears, 30, of Hazlehurst, at a Hazlehurst Dollar General store on a probation violation on August 7, 2025, Sears allegedly told the officers – a trooper from the Georgia State Patrol, deputies from the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office, and officers from the Hazlehurst Police Department – that he wasn’t going to jail. About the time the CCA football team was taking the field 112 miles away in Albany, the CCA Lady Patriots were finishing off the Trinity Christian Academy Crusaders in Dublin. The Lady Patriots won a 16-12 slugfest to improve to 8-3 this season. CCA tallied 17 hits and overcame seven errors to hold off the Crusaders. The CCA Patriots and the Sherwood Christian Academy (Albany) Eagles were in a dogfight for over three quarters at Sherwood’s stadium in the shadows of the Albany airport. Then the two-time defending state champion Eagles flexed their muscle and scored 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter enroute to a 46-13 win. A Coffee County man captured a rare sight over the weekend – a black racer eating another snake. Manuel Saavedra heard a commotion in some bushes on property he owns and walked over to investigate. It was there that he saw the two snakes struggling. Manuel submitted the photo in order to identify the two snakes he had seen – which are a black racer (the eater) and a hognose snake (the eatee; I know this isn’t a word but I like it in this context).
