Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill made headlines over the summer with some bold claims regarding what he plans to do in his second season in Miami. In Sunday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, Hill demonstrated that his comments weren’t just idle chatter. The Dolphins and Chargers went toe-to-toe for four quarters with Miami finally edging their West Coast opponents 36-34. Hill torched the Chargers’ secondary for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 11 receptions. The game was Hill’s third with over 200 yards receiving and first as a Dolphin. Hill helped quarterback Tua Tagovailoa amass…

Better late than never. The Coffee Trojans lived dangerously by that trite little cliche Friday night in Brunswick as they faced the Bolles Bulldogs in the annual Border Classic. The Trojans won 17-9 after trailing 6-0 at the half and after losing starting quarterback Maurice Hansley to injury in the second half. Neither team scored until late in the second quarter when the Bulldogs drew first blood on a long pass from senior quarterback DJ Moore to sophomore wide receiver Naeem Burroughs. The extra point was no good. Coffee missed a 43-yard field goal right before…

At Monday morning’s regular county commission meeting, the county signed its annual proclamation designating September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Though the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County is active year ‘round, in September, the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County becomes much more visible. Despite the group’s visibility, much of what they do is behind the scenes. Once they have a physician-signed diagnosis and treatment plan, members…

There’s catching a snake. Then there’s CATCHING a snake. Sunday afternoon, Derrick Bailey, who comes from South Georgia snake-catching royalty, caught an enormous eastern diamondback rattlesnake in Coffee County. And it’s all on video. A few weeks ago, one of Derrick’s sisters reported seeing a big rattlesnake near her back door. Derrick headed over but the snake had gotten away before he arrived. She knew exactly what she had seen and she knew it was a giant. The snake stayed out of sight until Derrick found it crossing a road. Judging from its size,…

Some time over the last 24 hours a person or persons defaced the Barney Fife mural that artist Dylan Ross painted on the side of an unoccupied house on Highway 441 in Broxton. At Monday night’s city commission meeting, commissioners approved a tentative plan to disburse funds from the National Opioid Settlement Agreement. Likewise, last year, CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart, along with two other manufacturers — Allergen and Teva — were brought into the suit. As you might imagine, the settlement is complicated and involves a number…

Coffee racked up 424 total yards — most of which were on the ground — compared to Bainbridge’s 390 total yards. Leading the way offensively for the second week in a row was senior running back Fred Brown, who rushed for 171 yards on 28 carries. He also scored one touchdown, bringing his total for the…

Friday night’s game between the visiting Bainbridge Bearcats and the Coffee Trojans couldn’t have started out worse. The Bearcats took the opening kick 70 yards to the Coffee 14 then scored on the second play of the game when quarterback Cam Sanders found Antavious Murphy standing right by himself in the front of the end zone. With less than a minute off the clock, Bainbridge had a 7-0 lead. The Trojans righted the ship from that point on, settled down, and fought to a 23-14 win to improve to 2-0 on the season. After the Bearcats…

Paulk II is Mayor Tony Paulk’s nephew. The other two commissioners on the ballot will return to office. Commissioners Kentaiwon Durham (Ward 2) and Steve Bailey (6) have no opposition. In…

The Coffee Trojans junior varsity squad handed the Colquitt County Packers football program its second loss in as many days to a Coffee team. The Coffee JV defeated the Colquitt JV 14-13 at Jardine Stadium a day after the sixth grade Trojans throttled the sixth grade Packers 44-14 over at Coffee Middle School. While the sixth graders handled things easily, it was a different story for the high schoolers. The Trojans didn’t have a lead for very long during the game and the outcome was never a given until literally the final play. Coffee scored first…
