Coffee County sheriff’s officials stated Friday they are continuing to pursue answers in the disappearance of 43-year-old Shawn Wayne Brooker. Sheriff’s officials, with the assistance of other law enforcement and private organizations, have conducted multiple ground searches around Coffee County, along with two aerial searches. Detectives continue to pursue leads into the case, have conducted numerous interviews, and have remained in constant contact with the family of Mr. Brooker, authorities said. City of Douglas officials announced late Thursday afternoon that, beginning tomorrow around noon, motorists will begin using a new access road to Waldroup Avenue. Signage will be available to assist all motorists. This will be a permanent access road to Waldroup Ave., as the old outlet will no longer exist. “We thank our citizens for their patience during the construction of the new bypass,” city representatives stated.
A combined effort by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Broxton Police Dept. last week resulted in the apprehension of a man wanted for suspected child molestation. Officials state Coffee County detectives were contacted by an officer with the Broxton Police Department last Friday, Jan. 27, requesting assistance in locating an individual identified as Chuckie Lee Matthews. Broxton police had secured warrants against Matthews for child molestation. Detectives located Matthews at a business in Douglas, where he was placed under arrest and transported to the Coffee County Jail.
An investigation into a report of suspected arson last week led authorities to a convicted sex offender wanted out of Cook County for a probation violation. Detectives with the Coffee Co. Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint of arson that had reportedly occurred at a residence in the Bridgetown area of the county. During the course of the investigation, authorities were led to an individual identified as Marvin Vickers. Two people were charged with multiple offenses, including intent to distribute cocaine, following an incident last Friday. Detectives with the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit executed a search warrant on a residence at 375 Sandy Springs Rd., where authorities discovered an undisclosed quantity of cocaine, marijuana, packaging materials, and a firearm. As a result of the investigation, Jeremiah Jones (44) was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana. A search warrant executed last week at a Douglas residence resulted in the arrests of two men, one a wanted fugitive, on suspicion of distributing cocaine. WALB – TV reported Friday afternoon the arrest of Atkinson County Probate Judge Marjorie Lee O’Brien. O’Brien faces one count of theft by taking and one count of violation of oath of office in regards to an incident involving between $12,000 and $13,000. O’Brien was released from jail Friday on bond.
An investigation into the suspected abuse of three juveniles led to the arrest of an Alma man Thursday, who now faces multiple battery, abuse, and drug-related charges. Woodrow Joyner (47) has been charged with three counts of battery, three counts of cruelty to children – first degree, and one count of sale of a controlled substance.
