Seventeen people lost their lives on Georgia highways during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period which began Wednesday and ran through Sunday evening. Of those, four were from Coffee County. On Thanksgiving Day, 22-year-old Nicole Torpea was killed as the result of a head-on collision that occurred in Candler County. Torpea, along with another occupant of the vehicle, 26-year-old Brian Keith Davis II of Baxley, lost her life in the accident which took place on Ga. Hwy. 121 near Metter. A Douglas man was arrested and jailed last week on two counts of endangering a child after authorities say he was driving under the influence of alcohol with two minors in his vehicle. Law enforcement initiated a traffic stop on 33-year-old Jamie Evans Thomas on Nov. 21 just after 6 a.m. on U.S. Hwy. 441 S. in the area of Covenant Church for a minor traffic infraction. Authorities with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office are reporting the recovery of a golf cart in Tift County that was reported stolen from a Coffee County residence earlier this month. On November 7, at approximately 5:40 p.m., a Coffee County deputy was dispatched to 3406 Fitzgerald Hwy. in Broxton , in reference to a theft of a golf cart. The complainant advised the golf cart was on a trailer parked next to her house when she left the residence around 7 a.m. on this date. The Coffee County Commission recognized the efforts of local hospice employees Monday during the commission’s regular meeting, declaring November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. In what has become an all-too-familiar occurrence for Domino’s Pizza employees in Douglas, a delivery driver was the latest victim of an alleged robbery over the weekend. At around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, officers with the Douglas Police Department responded to Domino’s in reference to an armed robbery that took place at 401 S. College Ave. The employee stated to officers she was delivering a pizza to the residence when she was approached by three black males wearing all black. Officials with the Douglas Police Department released crime statistics for the month of October through the agency’s Facebook page Monday morning. The release states, “The crimes reported in the crime statistics do not reflect all crimes within the City of Douglas or all the call types that officers respond to. The statistics shown are crimes reported under UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) and are used for state and national crime statistics. A 53-year-old grandfather was jailed last week after allegedly grabbing his daughter around the neck while attempting to have her and her children removed from his home. Authorities with the Douglas Police Department responded to 622 E. Sellers St. in reference to a male caller, later identified as Leondard Donald Voorhees, Jr., wanting his daughter and grandchildren removed from his house. When officers arrived, the daughter was outside the residence.
