Douglas Police Officer Larry Carter, who suffered a gunshot wound while attempting to chase an alleged armed robber in July, was commended Monday during the regular meeting of the Douglas City Commission. Carter was presented with the Purple Heart award for his bravery demonstrated on July 10, 2014. While in the line of duty, he was shot and wounded by a hostile offender while serving with C Squad of the Douglas Police Department. Officer Carter is the first officer within the City of Douglas’ history to receive this award.

As the traditional Halloween day quickly approaches on Friday, October 31st, the City of Douglas urges parents and neighborhoods to use safety cautions for personal safety and especially for kids by offering these safety tips. The City asks that Trick-Or-Treating take place between the hours of 6 p.m.– 9 p.m. The Douglas Police Department asks that parents do not allow their kids to be out past 9 p.m. so that residents in participating neighborhoods will not be disturbed past nine o’clock. James Willis, area manager for Georgia Power Company in Waycross, recently presented a check on behalf of the company to the James M. Dye Foundation on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. Accepting the check on behalf of the Foundation was SGSC President Dr. Virginia Carson. The Dye Foundation provides funding for various initiatives on SGSC’s Waycross Campus, outside of state appropriations, including student scholarships and campus events and programs. The Foundation is grateful for Georgia Power’s continued support as an educational partner. Cub Scout Pack 859 (First United Methodist Church – Aldersgate Sunday School Class) visited Douglas Fire Department Station #3 recently. The scouts were given a tour of the station, and were given some fire safety tips by firefighter AJ Dovers. They were shown all the clothing a firefighter must wear when fighting a fire, and were also greeted by Sparky the Firedog. If your son (first through fifth grades) is interested in joining the Cub Scouts, meetings are most Monday afternoons at Douglas FUMC beginning at 6:30.

South Georgia State College continues its tradition of high achievement in both athletics and academics as three teams and four individual students were submitted for recognition as 2014 Academic All-American teams by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for their academic achievements. The SGSC women’s softball team had an overall GPA of 3.46, the women’s swim team had an overall GPA of 3.19, and the women’s cross country team had an overall GPA of 3.01. The Citizens Christian Academy Lady Patriots saw their season come to an end in the second round of the state playoffs. The Lady Patriots, who received a first-round bye, lost to Piedmont in three games. Playing at home, CCA lost game one 9-4 but came back to win the second game 6-2. The decisive game three was a shootout, with Piedmont edging CCA 11-9. Today in Dublin, Piedmont plays Brentwood in the Final Four.

Douglas Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred late Monday at a local downtown restaurant. Officials state that officers responded to the Peking House restaurant on South Madison Ave. Monday night after receiving a report of an armed robbery which had just taken place. The victims told authorities that two men entered the business brandishing handguns. While one of the offenders held a restaurant employee at gunpoint, the other took cash from the register, along with a money bag that was located in the same vicinity. The men fled the scene and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.…

South Georgia State College is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) through its Georgia Young Adult Program (GYAP). A scholarship fund in memory of Dayne Purvis has been established by his family and friends to honor his integrity, work ethic, and love of community. Mr. Purvis’s greatest love was for his wife, Pat Tidwell Purvis, and their three children, Michael, David, and Nichole.
