Douglas Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred late Monday at a local downtown restaurant. Officials state that officers responded to the Peking House restaurant on South Madison Ave. Monday night after receiving a report of an armed robbery which had just taken place. The victims told authorities that two men entered the business brandishing handguns. While one of the offenders held a restaurant employee at gunpoint, the other took cash from the register, along with a money bag that was located in the same vicinity. South Georgia State College is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) through its Georgia Young Adult Program (GYAP). Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter has been named the Department Chair for the Humanities Division at South Georgia State College. Originally from Virginia, Dr. Porter comes most recently from Jacksonville State University in Alabama where she served as the Director of Academic Services. Dr. Porter has served as both teaching faculty and administrator with several institutions. The City of Douglas will host Satilla REMC’s 77th Annual meeting on Oct. 7 in downtown Douglas at Central Square Complex from 10 am-2 pm. This annual meeting will bring approximately 2,000 visitors to town. City officials have worked with the Satilla management team to develop plans to help with traffic and the pedestrian flow downtown. The City of Douglas announced this week the Douglas Fire Department recently hired its first female firefighter in the organization’s history. Brandi Horton is from McRae and joined the firefighting team at the Douglas Fire Department after serving several years as a volunteer at Horse Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Telfair County.
