A hit and run accident that occurred last week led to the arrest of a Waycross man on several traffic charges. According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, an accident took place on December 15 just after 7 a.m. The wreck took place at the intersection of East Baker Highway and McDonald Road. The driver of vehicle two reported that another driver, identified as Axel Aquino Hernandez, 26, of Waycross, had struck her vehicle and left the scene. Officers located Hernandez and stopped him. As Douglas police officers were heading out for patrol on December 16, a corporal mentioned that they needed to be on the lookout for Jennifer Hodnett, 42, of Douglas, who was wanted for allegedly shoplifting at Circle K on the south end of town. Around 9 p.m. that night, an officer saw Hodnett and another individual identified as Derick Smith in the area of Highway 221 North and Bowens Mill Road Southeast. A Fitzgerald woman was arrested and charged with stalking after she allegedly refused to leave her ex-boyfriend alone following a break-up. According to an incident report from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, on December 16, the complainant met with deputies and reported the incident. The complainant said that when the two had broken up a few days earlier, deputies had been called to the home where the break-up took place. Small grocery stores in the Town Center Zoning district can now sell alcoholic beverages. The Douglas city commission approved the request at last Monday’s regular city commission meeting. With the new apartments located downtown and more people visiting the district, owners of the small grocery stores had asked to be able to sell alcoholic beverages. In order to do so, however, the city had to amend the Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance. Around 5 a.m. on December 5, 2023, a deputy with the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office stopped a man riding a bicycle with no lights. The stop led to an arrest, and the suspect, Andre Petione Brockington, 53, had several active warrants and was jailed as a result. The incident report states that the deputy saw Brockington come out from behind Vickers Music in front his patrol car and cross West Baker Highway. A 47-year-old Douglas woman is in jail after she allegedly stole a CashApp card from a friend and withdrew nearly $800 from ATMs at two local convenience stores.
